In the last few weeks, the BraIN & Phy team had the presence of photographer Rodrigo Carvalho, who photographed the insect rearing populations stablished in the BraIN & Phy laboratory. The registers were taken with the purpose of enriching the visual collection of the laboratory, facilitating their uses in papers and scientific dissemination approaches, in addition to reporting the beauty of this “small” world.
Rodrigo Carvalho Gonçalves is a journalist and master in rural extension from the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV). For 15 years he has been dedicated to photography in different areas such as publicity, portraits, photojournalism, events, and the environment.
Since 2018, he has been working as a contracted photographer for the Postgraduate Program in Entomology at UFV, which allowed for greater contact with macro photography, following fieldwork with research teams (e.g., UFV Museum of Entomology Team), evolving his technique and improving the quality of his work.
During the visit, Rodrigo registered some of the groups of insects used in the research and outreach activities conducted by the BraIN & Phy team. We understand that the photographs will give a new look to the laboratory’s website and will arouse even more interest in entomology and our lines of research.
Rodrigo reports the challenges of macro photography, especially on insects that move around all the time, however, he emphasizes its importance and leaves persistence as his advice. “Persistence is an important feature for those who want to venture into this type of photography. In addition to the difficulties, I think that macro photography in general contributes significantly to scientific research. Not only for showing the micro universe, but also for adding other values to research, as a pedagogical tool for better presentations, a different aesthetic in the body of the research, another methodology for data analysis and unique and exclusive image content for each research”.
