Ecophysiological Interactions Among Aquatic Insects, Fishes and Pollutants

The 2020/2 period is over and with it the ENT 682 course “Ecophysiological Interactions Between Aquatic Insects, Fish and Pollutants” taught by Professor Eugênio E. de Oliveira in partnership with Dr. Renato Ferraz.

Renato Barbosa Ferraz has a degree in Animal Science and a Master in Animal Biology from the Universidade Federal de Viçosa (UFV) and Ph.D in Animal Science, specializing in genetics and breeding, from University of Porto, Portugal. Together with Professor Eugênio E. de Oliveira, they started the course in November last year, which was taught to students of the Graduate Program in Entomology and the Graduate Program in Ecology.

In its content, fundamental concepts and applications were addressed in the understanding of ecophysiological interactions between insects, fish and pollutants in aquatic systems, in addition to tools used in ecotoxicology such as bimolecular analyzes. As a complement to the content, in addition to the regular classes, the discipline had the participation of professors and guest researchers who gave different lectures.

On January 14, Ph.D Mariella Bontempo Duca de Freitas, Biologist with a Master’s and doctor in Animal Biology from the University of Brasília (unB), and an associate professor in the Department of Animal Biology at UFV gave a lecture entitled “Oxidative stress biomarkers as tools for studies on Ecotoxicology”.

On January 28, Ph.D. Wilson Rodrigues Valbon, Agronomist from the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES), master and doctor in Entomology by the Graduate Program in Entomology (PPGEnt – UFV) and currently Post-Doctoral Researcher in Duke University, North Carolina, gave his lecture entitled “More than bugs: Aquatic insects as a tool for environmental risk assessmet”.

And finally, on February 4, Ph.D. Sérgio Fenández-Boo, graduated and doctor. in Marine Biology from the University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain, and currently Post-Doctoral Researcher at the Interdisciplinary Center for Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR) at the University of Porto gave his lecture entitled “Effect of toxics compounds in fish immunity”.

The discipline will be offered again in this new period, 2021/1, this time in a condensed form. It can be inserted by the students through the enrollment agreement that will take place from the 8th of the 2th March, thorough the SAPIENS platform.
